Do you ever think why is it so hard for us to begin something new? Why is that first step so hard, so dreaded and postponed? It is simple: the human nature is the one to blame here. If we go to work, we know we are going to spend 8-9 hrs in the office and then we can go home. We will even get paid by next week. If we go to the movie theater, we know we will watch a movie, we will most likely enjoy it, and then we will go home. We will not get paid, but we know with fairly high certainty, that the movie will finish within 2.5 hrs. We have done it before.
Now, let's look at things we have never done before, like first date, starting a business, job interview, skiing, partner dancing or skydiving. For some of us, these things are unthinkable, almost taboo. Why? We do not know what to expect and how long is it going to take till we accomplish what we are about to embark on. It is uncomfortable, it is unsettling, it is dreadful. What if we fail? What if we lose the respect of others in the process? What if we waste time, effort and money and it turns to be futile? What if we end hurt or disappointed?
We are not made to enjoy embarking into something and not knowing when and how it is going to finish, and most importantly, how is it going to make us feel.
Fear have stopped many people from reaching their full potential or trying new things. The first step gets procrastinated over and over until it becomes forgotten. Either the oportunity has passed, or we have lost our motivation even more. At the end, we are left with regrets that we could have, maybe should have attempted, started or done it. The truth is, the sooner you pick the phone, write that email, do the research, take that first step, the sooner, you will know how long it takes and how it makes you feel. You can always correct a mistake, but you have nothing to correct, if you haven't began. Once you have completed the first step, the second one is not so intimidating and scary anymore. We all have been there. No matter how little the first step is, it creates confidence in the new subject or task, and makes the following one easier. So, start today, do not procrastinate. At Mastermind Works, we inspire you, we help you to take that first step, and we guide you to succeed.
